Idli Kottu, directed by Dhanush, has raised curiosity right from its announcement. With a talented cast, including Dhanush, Nithya Menen, Arun Vijay, Shalini Pandey, and Sathyaraj, the film promises to deliver an engaging narrative. The film released simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu on October 1st. Let’s check-out the review.

Plot

The plot follows Murali’s (Dhanush) journey as he rises to the top of the AFC food empire in Bangkok, only to be forced to return to his hometown after an unexpected incident. The story then unfolds as Murali fulfills his father’s dream, navigating the complexities of family dynamics and social expectations. While the narrative is simple and predictable, the film’s emotional moments and character interactions make it a worthwhile watch.

Performances

Dhanush delivers a natural and realistic performance, bringing depth to the character of Murali. His chemistry with Nithya Menen is palpable, and their interactions are some of the film’s highlights. Shalini Pandey and Sathyaraj also perform well in their respective roles, although their characters could have been developed further. Arun Vijay’s portrayal of the antagonist is loud and over-the-top at times, but he does justice to his role. Raj Kiran brings depth in father’s role.

Highlights

Dhanush

Emotional moments

Natural performances

Good cinematography

Drawbacks

Predictable plot

Slow At Times

Analysis

Idli Kottu is an emotional family entertainer that has its moments. While the emotional scenes in the first half work well, the second half falls into a predictable hero-villain conflict, which brings down the impact. Dhanush and the other actors perform well, but the familiar storyline makes Idli Kottu restricted at a level. With some tighter editing and a more nuanced approach to the plot, the film could have been more impactful. Idli Kottu is a good option for those who enjoy family dramas and emotional stories.

The film’s strengths lie in its emotional moments, which are handled well by Dhanush. However, the pacing is slow, and the second half falls into a predictable hero-villain conflict, which detracts from the overall impact. The film’s technical aspects are impressive. The cinematography is a highlight, capturing the village atmosphere in a natural and realistic way. The music and background score are decent. The editing is adequate, although it could have been tighter in some places. The production values are good, and the action sequences are well-crafted.

Rating: 3.25/5
