Anupama Parameswaran in a lead role after a series of memorable performances, Naresh Vijay Krishna, Tarun Bhaskar, Akhil and a bunch of talented artists coming together, Crazy Kalyanam grabbed attention right from its promotions. The quirky title, colourful posters and fun filled teaser promised a complete family entertainer. Crazy Kalyanam arrived on October 16th. Let’s see if the film lives up to its crazy title and promotional hype.

Plot:

Crazy Kalyanam is set in a middle class Telugu family where a wedding is supposed to bring happiness, but instead brings utter chaos. Keerthi (Anupama Parameswaran) is an independent, bubbly girl whose marriage is fixed with her lover Akhil. Everything looks perfect until her father Balaraju (Naresh Vijay Krishna) gets overly involved in the wedding preparations. Balaraju wants his daughter’s kalyanam to be the most memorable event in the village, but his over enthusiasm, old school beliefs and emotional decisions turn the whole wedding into a series of crazy confusions.

On the other side, Keerthi’s brother (Tharun Bhaskar) and his set of friends add more madness to the situation. A small lie, a missing nuptial chain, an unexpected guest, and ego clashes between both families push the wedding to the verge of cancellation. How this crazy family handles the chaos, how Balaraju realizes his mistakes, and whether Keerthi’s wedding happens happily forms the heartwarming crux of Crazy Kalyanam.

Performances:

Anupama Parameswaran is the soul of Crazy Kalyanam. She is brilliant as Keerthi. She brings that perfect balance of innocence, emotion and bubbliness. In comedy scenes she is effortless, in emotional scenes she makes you cry. After a long time, Anupama got a role that has full scope for performance and she completely owns every frame. Her chemistry with Akhil is cute and her emotional scenes with Naresh are deeply moving.

Naresh Vijay Krishna delivers an award winning performance as Balaraju. Especially in the pre climax, his acting is masterclass. The way he portrays a father’s love, ego, fear and guilt is outstanding. His comic timing in first half is hilarious and his emotional outburst in the second half will stay with you.

Tharun Bhaskar is interesting. From first scene till interval, you feel like why did he accept this role, because his character looks underwritten and confused. But in one single sequence towards the end, he justifies why he is the only correct choice for that role. That transformation scene is superbly performed.

Akhil as Keerthi’s lover is apt and does justice to his role. He looks natural and handles his part well. Mounika as Balaraju’s wife is a wonderful find for Tollywood. Her subtle performance is a big asset. Rest of the supporting cast also add to the fun.

Lengthy Runtime

Analysis:

First half of Crazy Kalyanam starts on a slightly slow note, taking its time to establish the family, Balaraju’s character and Keerthi’s wedding backdrop. But once the confusion starts, the film picks up beautifully. The wedding chaos, Balaraju’s over action, Tharun Bhaskar’s silly plans and Anupama’s frustration create genuine laughs. It is a clean, relatable comedy that every family will connect to. Interval is placed at a good point with a funny twist.

Second half is where the film becomes more emotional and meaningful. The crazy comedy slowly turns into touching family drama. The pre climax and climax portions are the heart of the film. Naresh’s performance takes the film to another level and the message about understanding between parents and children is conveyed beautifully without being preachy. Though the second half feels a bit lengthy and editing could have been tighter, but the emotional payoff is so satisfying that you forgive those small flaws.

Technically, Crazy Kalyanam is very good and rich. Cinematography brings a pleasant, colourful feel to the film, especially the wedding sequences and village backdrop look vibrant. Production values are excellent, you can see every penny spent on screen, no compromise anywhere. Music by Suresh Bobbili is a big plus, songs are melodious and situational, and his background score elevates both comedy and emotional scenes perfectly. Editing needed a bit more care to control runtime. Overall, Crazy Kalyanam is not trying to be a big, loud entertainer. It tries to make you laugh, think and feel. And it succeeds.

Rating: 3/5

Bottom-line: A Heartwarming, Hilarious Family Entertainer
