People Media Factory head Vishwa Prasad’s daughter Krithi Prasad turning producer with Garividi Lakshmi.
Aanandi playing the title role, Rag Mayur, Naresh, Vijay Krishna in key roles, Gauri Naidu Jammu debuting as director, and Charan Arjun as music director, the team looked fresh and honest. With good buzz, Garividi Lakshmi arrived with genuine expectations in theatres.

Plot:

Garividi Lakshmi is the story of Vijayalakshmi played by Aanandi, a girl from Garividi village. From childhood, she never got her father’s love. Married off at a young age, she becomes a victim of her husband’s betrayal and is left as a lonely woman. Life hits her hard, but destiny gives her a new path through Burrakatha, the traditional storytelling art. What starts as a small attempt to survive by telling Burrakatha stories slowly becomes her identity. How does her journey progress? What is the role of Satthi Babu (Rag Mayur) who enters her life? How does Vijayalakshmi transform into Garividi Lakshmi who is loved by the whole village? What is the role of Rambabu (Naresh VK) ? And what about the young director (Ankit Koyya) who comes from Hyderabad to make her life into a film, does he succeed in bringing her story to the big screen? The answers form the rest of the film.

Performances:

Aanandi is outstanding as Garividi Lakshmi and this is easily one of the best performances of her career. She lives as Vijayalakshmi. From a young girl craving father’s love, to a betrayed wife, to a strong woman who finds purpose through Burrakatha, she shows multiple shades with such ease. She doesn’t just act, she becomes Lakshmi.

Rag Mayur as Satthi Babu is excellent. With his impressive act, he proves why he is such a dependable actor. He brings honesty and warmth. His subtle, understated performance balances Aanandi’s intense act perfectly. His chemistry with Aanandi is very natural and touching. Naresh as Rambabu brings his experience into display and Ankit Koyya as the Hyderabad director are good adds more value.

Slow Pace
Initial Portions

Analysis :

Director Gowri Naidu Jammu makes a promising debut. His writing is rooted and respectful towards rural art forms. After taking its time during initial portions to enter into main plot, the First half of Garividi Lakshmi turns engaging and establishes Vijayalakshmi’s painful past and her introduction to Burrakatha beautifully. The childhood portions, her failed marriage and her lonely struggle are shown with sensitivity. Once the Burrakatha track starts, the film finds its rhythm. Interval is emotional and gives a good high. Second half focuses more on her rise as Garividi Lakshmi, her relationship with Satthi Babu and the film within film track with the Hyderabad director. Though it becomes a bit predictable and slightly slow in parts, the emotional core holds it together especially the final hour connects deeply.

Technically, the film is strong and soulful. Director Gowri Naidu doesn’t make Lakshmi’s story melodramatic, he keeps it real and soulful. His detailing of Burrakatha culture and village life is impressive. Music by Charan Arjun is a major asset, especially Burrakatha songs and background score that elevates Aanandi’s stage performances. Cinematography captures the village of Garividi and Telangana backdrop authentically. Art department and costumes are realistic. Producer Krithi Prasad deserves special appreciation. Backing a female led, art form based story is a brave and commendable decision. The production values are neat. Though the pace is slow in places and second half could have been tighter, Gauri Naidu Jammu’s honest direction and Krithi Prasad’s brave production make it work. Overall, Garividi Lakshmi is a clean, emotional and inspiring film that celebrates a woman’s strength and a forgotten art form. It stays with you.

Rating: 3.5/5

Bottom Line: A Soulful Journey Of A Woman’s Resilience
