Hey Sinamika, a youthful entertainer starring Dulquer Salman, Aditi Rao Hydari and Kajal Agarwal in the lead roles, is all set to be released on 3 March in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
The film bankrolled by Jio Studios with Global One Studios as associate producer marks the directorial debut of leading dance choreographer Brinda ‘Master’. Ahead of the movie’s release, Aditi shares her experience about working in Hey Sinamika.
Excerpts from the interview.
What made you accept this movie?
I adore Brinda master and loved working with her. This is her first directorial film and it is a fun story. She was particular that only Dulquer and I should be cast in the movie. It is good to see a director have so much confidence that she sees you in her vision. I feel very excited to work with a director like that. It is also the combination of story, director and actors. I get to play something very different from my previous works.
How was it working with Dulquer Salman?
Dulquer and I have been friends even before this film. For us it was exciting and fun to work in a film together. We were looking forward to sharing the screen. We also had to do it for the respect we had on master. Working on such a happy project is a lot of fun.
How different is your role in this movie?
My role in Hey Sinamika is completely different from what I have played so far. There are different sides of a person. Only people who are very close to me get to see my goofy side. I feel like Brindha has seen that side of me during our rehearsals. She tapped in to that when she wanted to cast me in the film. There were no rules while shooting and I could do anything. I completely enjoyed myself.
How was it performing comedy in this flick?
I have never done a light hearted role before. Most of it is in the script, situation and the way it is staged. The ability to make people laugh is one of the most difficult things. It is all the result of the way in which the scene has been conceived. We had a lot of really interesting and incredible actors with us which made things a lot easier.
What rating would you give for Brinda as a director?
She was super efficient as a director. She did not bring her choreographer aspects on the set. She kept those two departments separately. She also knew how to handle the actor. For instance she would take long shot dance sequences involving me. She knew that I preferred rehearsals and always planned accordingly. She is more like an excited child on the sets. Brinda enjoys herself when she is directing. It was infectious and spread to the entire cast and crew. She was very particular about what she wanted but also gave us freedom. She kept everyone in good spirits and we also delivered whatever she wanted.
About working with Kajal…
Kajal has a lot of experience, she has done a huge number of films. I actually did not have many scenes with her. There were only a few key scenes. She joined the team only in the last few days. Her entry gave a new energy. I have to credit Kajal for getting in sync with all of us. It was great fun working with her. I also admire how she manages to deliver her best despite the language barriers.
Share some interesting moments from the shooting spot…
We had some crazy situations while filming. We were all caught in the midst of a cyclone and stayed together. There was one particular scene where I started panicking and started crying. Dulquer started teasing me, took photos and posted on social media. During the initial stages of Covid, we used to take rasam and continue shooting. Later lockdown was announced, but once the relaxations were made we came back with more energy. I did not want this shoot to get over and actually cried on the last day of filming.
What is your view about multi-starrers?
Multi-starrers are great. For me there is no ego or insecurity involved in doing multistarrer. When you work with people you trust, you do not feel insecure. I am very clear about why I am doing a film and what part I have in it. For me it is important to impress the audience. Though I do not want to get associated with one particular genre of movie, I love doing love stories. When there is a different take or journey in a love story, it is always interesting. We get to explore different emotions and layers.
How would you want people to remember you?
I find cinema to be magical and timeless. Which is why it is important for me to work with directors I respect and admire. I want to be somebody who is timeless and relevant with time.
