Arya (Sajal Ali) is assaulted and raped by four individuals whom she has irritated at a party. When Devika (Sridevi) knows about the incident she is horrified. The family takes the issue to the court. What happens when the justice isn’t meted and how Devika gets the revenge is the overall story of Mom.

PERFORMANCES :

Sridevi gives a master class in performance, this time in a passive-aggressive role. The breakdown scene when she first watches her daughter on the hospital bed and the subsequent scenes will make the heart melt of any stonehearted fellow. Sridevi is that awesome. And those were only few of the many scenes the film is filled with.

Nawazzuddin Siddique as the detective is fantastic. We never see the star character artist but just the character in the movie. The actor brings certain depth into the role to make it stand out from the crowd, it is something only he can do and that is why he is such a special talent.

Akshaye Khanna returns to big screen after a long gap and that too in a substantial role. He has terrific screen presence and one wishes the actor is utilized more frequently in the upcoming movies.

Sajal Ali and Adnan Siddiqui were also amazing in the roles they have been given. There is nothing to take away from them despite their role limitations. Abhimanyu Singh has smaller role but he leaves an impression in the end.

ANALYSIS :

Director Ravi Udyawar has taken a strong subject for his debut. also, he has got a dream cast in place. Mom is nothing but a combination of these two factors and that is why what we get in the end is a powerful product.

The first half of the movie establishes the problem and how helpless the whole system is in delivering justice. The problem the household of the Devaki undergoes could happen to anyone, it is that relatable. Once a dead end is hit and the family is left with no option, the movie takes a masala turn and it is Sridevi’s show all the way. The end is very fulfilling and serves the purpose in bringing a commercial entertainer very well.

Mom basically encapsulates the fear of a woman in the current society and the horrors that they live with. Sridevi deserves kudos for picking such a bold subject and getting it made in a fine commercial way that could reach a wider section of audience.

AR Rahman’s songs are mostly used in the background as part of background score which is amazing. The cinematography by Anay Goswami is very good. Editing is sharp. Dialogues are to the point. Production values are good.

Bottom-line:: Sridevi shows power of Mom

Rating:: 3.5/5
