Story:
Rani Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) is married to Maharaja Rawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) of Chittor. When Sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Khalji (Ranveer Singh) comes to know of the beauty of Padmavati, he wants to get her come what may. He takes an army and marches to the Kingdom of Chittor. How Padmavati escapes from his clutches is the overall story.
Performances:
Shahid Kapoor is thoroughly restrained and shows poise as a Rajput king. He looks and acts the part well. There are many scenes which demonstrate the power of the performer in him. But, he is riddled with a weak character.
Deepika Padukone shines in the title role of Padmavati. She needs to be beautiful and make the audience believe that one can go to any length to catch a glimpse of her beauty. Deepika makes that possible effortlessly and more. She shows the true spirit of a Rajput queen and the final climax stands out because of her act.
And the best is saved for the last. Actor Ranveer Singh is the show stealer. He grabs all the attention whenever he is on screen. Ranveer has delivered a deliciously wicked character that the audience will come to love to hate. There are many moments where Ranveer could have gone over the top and diluted the impact, but whenever such moments occur, he reigns himself in the right way to leave an impression.
The rest of the actors get small bits and pieces part, and they do a commendable job like Jib Sarbh, Raza Murad, and Aditi Rao Hydari, etc.

Analysis:
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali known for making epic big-screen ventures is back again with a new offering in a similar mold. It is his most controversial film yet, and when one watches the movie, there is definitely going to be a feeling that what was all the fuss about. There is nothing in the film demeaning the community of the Rajput.
If we leave aside the obvious Hindu and Muslim representation on screen and look at the movie from a creative aspect and analyze the direction and other departments, Padmaavat is a winner on many fronts. The direction is impeccable with the entire cast delivering a solid performance. There is the issue with the screenplay though, as not much happens at times and when the pace is slow, there is a feeling of unease.
The first and second half has many well-acted and engaging moments all due to Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. The climax is executed and acted well by all the on and off screen talents coming in perfect unison. It generates a haunting feeling that is sure to stay with the audience after they leave the cinemas.
The director has also given the music, and he did a commendable job with it. The technical team has all come with a superb effort to deliver an extraordinary looking film. The production values are grand, and they need to be appreciated for baking the movie.
