Akhanda 2: Thaandavam is the sequel to the 2021 Blockbuster Akhanda, arriving with heightened expectations after overcoming release hurdles. The film expands on the Aghora universe, blending action, spirituality, and patriotism, with Balakrishna reprising his iconic role directed by Boyapati Sreenu in 14 Reels Plus production handled by Raam Achanta, Gopi Achanta. Akhanda hit the screens worldwide from special shows on December 11 and fullfledged release from December 12.

Plot:

The story unfolds with the Tibetan army unleashing a biowarfare attack on India’s Maha Kumbh Mela, pushing the nation to the brink. As a DRDO scientist Janani (Harshaali Malhotra) daughter of Muralikrishna (Nandamuri Balakrishna) develops an antidote, she’s hunted by enemies. Enter Akhanda (Balakrishna), the detached Aghora, who vows to protect her and restore sanatana dharma. The narrative navigates geopolitical tensions with China, shaman Visoochi (Aadhi Pinisetty) escalating into a high-octane battle between good and evil.

Performances:

Nandamuri Balakrishna is the film’s heartbeat, delivering a stunning performance as the Aghora. His dialogue delivery, screen presence, and aura are mesmerizing. As MLA Balamurali Krishna, he’s brief but impactful. Harshaali Malhotra is earnest as Janani, though her character lacks depth. Samyuktha has limited scope but handles action sequences decently. Aadi Pinisetty is menacing as the villain, and Tarun Khanna adds spiritual gravitas as Lord Shiva. The supporting cast complements within their space.

Highlights:

Nandamuri Balakrishna
Dialogues About Sanatana Dharma
Couple Of Massive Action
Spiritual Vibes

Drawbacks:

Weak Story
Over the Top Execution

Analysis:

Akhanda 2 is a bombastic, watchable ride that banks on Balakrishna’s star power. Boyapati Sreenu amps up the mass elements, with breathtaking action sequences. Balakrishna’s towering presence as Akhanda drives the film, with his stunts and emotional beats leaving an impact. The spiritual undertones and patriotic dialogues add layers. The action is relentless, designed for mass appeal, and the production values are undeniably rich. The story is simple and predictable, missing the complexity of Akhanda. Aghora’s emotional connection with Janani is sidelined, and at times the action feels over the top action missing emotion.

Thaman’s thunderous BGM elevating the experience. His BGM is a standout, though occasionally overpowering. VFX could have been better. C. Ramprasad and Santosh Detake’s cinematography captures landscapes beautifully, though VFX is subpar. Tammiraju’s editing maintains pace but drags mid way. Overall, Akhanda 2 is a functional, loud entertainer that’ll thrill Balakrishna fans and those seeking spiritual-action fusion. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel but delivers enough thrills. A tighter script and nuanced writing could have elevated it further.

Rating: 3/5

Bottom-line: NBK’s Roaring Mass Entertainer with Spiritual Depth
