‘Arabia Kadali’ is a web series drawing inspiration from the true events of 2018, when fishermen from Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district were detained in Pakistan. SatyaDev and Aanandhi played the lead roles. The series is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
Plot:
The series follows the story of Nuragala Badiri (Satya Dev), a well-read and composed fisherman from Chepalawada, and his love interest Ganga (Aanandhi) from the neighboring village of Matsyawada. Due to the lack of proper infrastructure in their village, Badiri and other fishermen travel to Gujarat for work, where they accidentally drift into Pakistani waters, leading to their detention. The series explores the struggles of the fishermen in jail, the efforts of their families to secure their release, and the bureaucratic hurdles they face.
Performances:
The performances in the series are authentic and rooted, with Satyadev delivering a committed performance as Badiri. He gets into the skin of the character with intensity and a controlled vulnerability that is captivating. Anandhi plays her part well, and is equally compelling, anchoring the emotional core of the narrative back in the village . The supporting cast, including Nasser, Raghu Babu, and Poonam Bajwa, perform with restraint, adding depth to the narrative. Nasser, Raghu Babu, and Poonam Bajwa deliver performances of subtle power, while Harsh Roshan as Ganga’s brother and the jail warden Amit have standout moments that add crucial depth to the story.

The series is a heartfelt and sincere retelling of this crisis, combining a grounded human story with thematic depth. However, the series suffers from uneven emotional engagement. The VFX, especially in storm sequences, is unconvincing.
The direction by VV Surya Kumar is sincere, although more functional than dynamic. The screenplay and story by Chintakindi Srinivas Rao along with Krish stay true to the subject without deviations. The cinematography by Sameer Reddy captures both the scale of the sea and the intimacy of the villages. The music by Nagavelli Vidyasagar is commendable, supporting emotional beats without overpowering them.
‘Arabia Kadali’ is a sincere and well-researched portrayal of the lives and vulnerabilities of coastal communities. While it suffers from some technical issues and pacing issues at times, the series is worth watching for its grounded storytelling, strong performances, and thought-provoking themes. With its attention to detail and authentic portrayal, ‘Arabia Kadali’ is a must-watch for those interested in stories based on real-life events.
