Kiran Abbavaram returns with Chennai Love Story, a romantic drama that positions itself as more than a city specific tale. Penned by Sai Rajesh of National Award winning Baby fame and directed by Ravi Namburii, the film arrived on July 24, 2026 with high expectations for emotional storytelling. Producer SKN backs it under Mass Movie Makers banner, and with Mani Sharma composing after a gap, the project carried strong word-of-mouth even before release.
Plot
The story follows Nivi, played by Sri Gouri Priya, a young woman dealing with emotional scars from her past. She crosses paths with Steven Shankar, an aspiring filmmaker portrayed by Kiran Abbavaram. Their bond grows through shared vulnerabilities, dreams, and small joys of everyday Chennai life. Ajay, played by Thrigun, becomes a crucial pivot in their journey, adding layers of conflict and choice. Without giving spoilers, the narrative moves from tender romance to questions of sacrifice, timing, and what it means to truly support someone you love. It’s framed as a “Chennai Love Story,” but the emotions are universal.
Performances
This is where Chennai Love Story finds its strongest footing. Kiran Abbavaram delivers a career best performance. He completely dissolves into Steven, shifting body language from a guarded orphan to an optimistic lover, and later to a man carrying quiet heartbreak. His screen presence anchors every frame he’s in.
Sri Gouri Priya matches him beat for beat. As Nivi, she navigates grief, hope, and resilience with remarkable control. Her eyes do most of the work in silent moments, and when the script demands an emotional outburst, she delivers without melodrama. The breakup and post-interval sequences are her standout portions.
Thrigun as Ajay brings balance and dignity to a complex role. He avoids making it black or white, instead playing a character caught in difficult circumstances. The supporting cast Siri Hanumanthu, Mahender, Naveen, and Pooja work well as the friend circle, bringing lightness. Pramodini and Devi Prasad are credible as parents, while Karuna Kumar and a cameo by P. Vasu add gravitas.

Analysis
The first half is where the film breathes best. Ravi Namburii and Sai Rajesh keep things simple, introductions, and city slices, light comedy, and the slow bloom of romance. The writing is direct and the emotional connect is established early. The interval twist arrives as a well-timed jolt. It reframes the characters’ choices and sets up genuine stakes. Even if seasoned viewers see shades of familiar tropes, the execution feels fresh because of the performances and the grounded treatment.
The second half leans deeper into pain and consequence. It does get a bit stretched in places with repetitive scenes that slow momentum, and a few conveniences creep into the screenplay. Yet the film recovers through its emotional core. The pre-climax action bit is staged creatively, and the climax chooses heart over spectacle, ending on a note of sacrifice that feels earned.
Technically, Viswas Daniel’s cinematography is a visual asset, warm palettes for romance, cooler tones for conflict. Mani Sharma is in God mode, delivering melodious songs and a BGM that amplifies every emotional beat. Santosh Naidu’s editing is functional though a tighter cut could have helped. Production values are grand without being loud. Ultimately, Chennai Love Story works because it believes in its emotions and lets its actors carry them. Despite minor pacing issues, it lands as a sincere, well-acted romantic drama worth watching this weekend.
