After a robbery, one guy kills the rest who are part of the job. A year later Saraswati (Lakshmi) brings all the people killed to avenge their death by finding the killer. Saraswati (Lakshmi) suggests taking the help of Pencil (Nani). How he gets convinced? Who is the killer? Did the ladies get their revenge?
Nani is terrific in the role of Pencil Parthasarathy. It is his small details that make the character a winner. The body language too is altered slightly keeping in tune with the role of a writer. All the scenes involving Nani and Lakshmi show a different side to the Natural Star. It is mentioned, mainly because romance and comedy need no special mention. They are sensational like we expect with proper timing and pauses.
Priyanka Mohan is decent in the first outing in Telugu. She lives in character without getting out of it for the duration. The homely nature makes her instantly likable.
Karthikeya, who is going well as a lead hero, has taken a different part. It is a negative role, and he shines playing it to the galleries in an underplay manner.
Lakshmi and Saranya Ponvannan show why they are senior pros with their subtle yet emotional acts. They live in their roles are pack the right emotional punch wherever required.
Vennela Kishore and Sathya appear in small roles. The former is hilarious in one scene, whereas the latter plays a critical part in the narrative. The rest are decent in their roles as well.
Vikram’s Screenplay & Direction
Drags a little bit in the second half
Vikram K Kumar, known for his unique concepts, is back with another one. This time it is a revenge story where the revenge-seekers are helpless old and young females. They take the help of a writer in getting revenge against an unknown enemy.
The first thing that stands out and impresses us immediately is the screenplay and the underlying emotion behind it. The core point and essence are told clearly within the first ten minutes itself. It lays a solid foundation for the revenge that follows.
What happens afterward is told thrillingly with lots of comedy wrapped around it. Nani and the senior actors carry it ably on their shoulders. What also helps the narrative is an active antagonist and that we get in the form of Deva (Karthikeya).
A challenging villain increases the tension, and finally, it has a bigger payoff at the success. Vikram K Kumar achieves those with the help of Nani. The second half plays well at all the key moments. There are neatly placed twists that never go overboard. Everything is done within the confines of the established universe.
The climax is satisfying with a neat action block between the hero and the villain. Anirudh further elevates the ending emotionally with his background score. Overall, Gang Leader is an enjoyable watch for sure, for all the thrills and fun.
Anirudh has done an excellent job with the music. The songs and the background score are both terrific. He has now given back to back classic stuff for Nani. The cinematography by Miroslaw Kuba Brozek is excellent. A gritty, realistic tone is maintained throughout which adds to the overall impact. The editing by Naveen Nooli is sharp. The dialogue sticks to the narrative and is not used for punches sake alone. They help in integrating the comedy into the story.
The production values are fantastic by Mythri Movie Makers. It is highly commendable that they are backing strong content. It is increasing the brand value and is sure to yield great results box office wise as well.
Bottom line: A Highly Entertaining Revenge Tale
